In this year's Global Game Jam, I joined with three friends to make a platformer game with a literal twist. The Land of Yx is a short 2D platformer that operates in 3D. The player must navigate a mysterious ruined palace by walking left and right, but some puzzles can only be solved by rotating from the X-axis to the Y-axis (and day to night) and encountering the world from a different perspective.
I contributed the models and materials, as well as the music, menus, and initial character design. My teammates made charming animations, atmospheric backgrounds, and crucially, made the game and all of its interesting mechanics work smoothly. I had a great time working with my team, from brainstorming the initial idea, to breaking out into our separate jobs in our different areas of expertise, to bringing it all back together into the final product in time for the submission. Though we accomplished our goal for the game jam, I hope to push forward with this idea and make a full game from the concept if I have the opportunity. The version of the game submitted for the jam can be found here: https://itsdabenji.itch.io/the-land-of-yx
